The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the abduction of Honourable Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court, describing the incident as a direct attack on the judiciary, the administration of justice, and the rule of law.
Suspected armed bandits seized the judge from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State in the early hours of July 26, 2026. The attack occurred shortly after he returned from a trip to Sokoto. Police confirmed the abduction around midnight, noting that the gunmen fired shots before taking him away. No other members of the household were reported injured.
In a statement signed by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association said judicial officers hold a sacred position in Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and must be able to perform their duties without fear, intimidation, or threats to their lives. It warned that the growing boldness of criminals targeting key institutions and officials undermines public confidence in the justice system and highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures nationwide.
The NBA called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the National Security Adviser, and other security agencies to deploy all available human and technological resources to secure Justice Bunza’s immediate and unconditional release. It also urged the Kebbi State Government to work closely with federal agencies to rescue the judge unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The association further demanded enhanced security arrangements for judicial officers across the country, stressing that protecting members of the Bench is essential to preserving the independence, integrity, and effectiveness of the judiciary.
Police in Kebbi State have deployed tactical and intelligence teams to comb suspected locations, including forest areas, in ongoing rescue efforts. The NBA expressed solidarity with Justice Bunza, his family, colleagues on the Bench, and the Kebbi State judiciary, praying for his swift and safe return.
