Members of the National Council for Finance and Economic Development (NCFED) are set to converge on Owerri, Imo State, for a four-day conference aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal and economic framework.
The conference, the first NCFED meeting to be held in the Southeast geopolitical zone, is scheduled to commence on Monday, August 16, at the Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre (EIICC), Owerri.
The event, with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy as chairman, is expected to attract financial experts, state commissioners for finance, accountants-general of states and other key stakeholders from across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Briefing newsmen on the programmes lined up for the conference, the Imo State Commissioner for Finance and Coordinating Economy, Mr. Chuks Chukemeka, said participants would deliberate on measures to strengthen the nation’s economy and promote sustainable fiscal development.
According to him, the discussions would focus on strategies that could improve revenue generation, ensure equitable allocation of resources and create positive economic outcomes for the states.
The commissioner said the conference was in line with its theme: “Strengthening Fiscal Federalism for Sustainable Revenue Generation, Equitable Allocation and Economic Resilience in a Volatile Global Economy.”
The conference is expected to be declared open by the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma.
Beyond its economic policy implications, Chukemeka said the conference would provide a boost to the state’s hospitality industry, as the influx of participants and other visitors is expected to increase demand for hotel accommodation and related services.
“We are expecting at least 300 visitors who will seek hotel accommodation in our state, and this will surely boost our economy,” the commissioner said.
He added that the hosting of the conference would further showcase Imo State as a destination for major national economic and professional engagements.
