The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has alleged the killing of Dele Ayegbo, nephew of the party’s governorship campaign Director-General, Wole Oke, in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area.
According to the APC state spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, Ayegbo was shot dead on Wednesday night in the Idofin area of Esa-Oke.
Olabisi said the victim was attacked at a road junction near his residence by suspected hoodlums who arrived in a vehicle. He alleged that supporters of the Accord Party were behind the attack, accusing them of targeting APC members and supporters across the state.
The APC spokesperson said two people were shot during the incident, with Ayegbo reportedly dying at the scene. The second victim, he added, was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Describing the incident as “one death too many,” Olabisi called on the police to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
He also alleged that more than 30 APC members had been killed by political thugs across Osun State since 2022, claiming that 17 of the reported deaths occurred in Ijesaland.
Olabisi further accused the state government of failing to adequately condemn attacks on APC members, alleging that such inaction had contributed to the escalation of political violence.
He urged the Osun State Police Command to investigate the latest incident and take measures to prevent further attacks ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
“The purpose is to scare away our members and supporters from exercising their civic responsibility on Saturday,” he said.
The allegation comes amid heightened political tension in Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with rival political camps trading accusations over attacks and violence.
However, the Osun State Police Command had not confirmed the reported killing as of the time of filing this report. The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, was yet to respond to requests for comment.
