The kidnappers holding Chief Sir Joseph Ezeokafor, Chairman of Jezco Group and a prominent Anambra businessman, have increased their ransom demand to N1.5 billion, according to a source close to the family.
Ezeokafor, a septuagenarian, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while travelling to a prayer ground for his annual spiritual retreat. He left his home around 2 a.m. without his security detail, leaving him exposed to the attackers.
The abductors initially demanded N700 million. The family indicated readiness to negotiate, but the kidnappers later raised the figure to N1.5 billion. Communication between the family and the captors has since broken down, and efforts to re-establish contact have so far failed.
The development has left relatives in a difficult position. Neither the Anambra State Police Command nor the state government has issued a public statement on the incident, which occurred about a week ago. The businessman’s current whereabouts and the status of any ongoing rescue efforts remain unclear.
The abduction has drawn concern among Ezeokafor’s associates and members of his community.
