Nigeria has secured international recognition for its measurement standards after signing the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM MRA) in France.
The agreement was signed by Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) Director-General Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke at the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures. The signing marked Okeke’s third anniversary in office.
According to a statement by SON Director of Corporate Affairs Mrs Ethan Talatu, Nigeria’s admission as an Associate State of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) took effect on June 4, 2026.
The CIPM MRA enables national metrology institutes to demonstrate that their measurement standards are equivalent. This earns global acceptance for their calibration and measurement certificates.
Okeke said the arrangement would deliver international recognition of Nigeria’s measurement capabilities and make its calibration certificates accepted worldwide. He said it would ease cross-border trade, reduce reliance on foreign metrology services, strengthen SON’s technical authority and open opportunities for scientific collaboration and capacity building.
Nigeria now joins Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia as the only African countries with BIPM membership. Manufacturers and small businesses will be able to test products locally and have the results trusted abroad, avoiding the expense of foreign laboratories.
