Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of presiding over a country riddled with systemic corruption.
Speaking at a memorial event in Abuja for the late elder statesman Edwin Clark, Obi lamented the current state of governance in Nigeria, describing it as plagued by incessant theft of public resources.
“This is no longer a democratic country; we need to tell ourselves the truth,” Obi stated. “What we are witnessing today is not governance—it’s stealing, stealing, and more stealing.”
Drawing a comparison between past and present leadership, the former Anambra State governor praised former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, calling him a model of integrity.
“General Gowon, you sacrificed everything for this country,” Obi said. “But the Nigeria you gave so much for has now turned into a crime scene. The labour of our past heroes is being wasted.”
Obi also dismissed claims that his remarks were aimed at demarketing Nigeria, insisting that his criticisms stem from a desire for accountability and national progress.
