The Federal Government has commenced a new wave of mass trials, arraigning more than 600 terrorism suspects before the Federal High Court in Abuja on various charges linked to insurgency and terrorist activities.
The suspects, arrested across different parts of the country, face allegations including active participation in terrorist attacks, membership of proscribed terrorist organisations, terrorism financing, and failure to disclose information about terrorist activities within their communities.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is personally leading the prosecution team in this latest phase of the trials.
The proceedings come on the heels of an earlier mass trial conducted in April, during which over 500 suspects were arraigned. According to government records, 386 of those defendants were convicted, while two were acquitted and eight discharged.
Authorities say the ongoing trials underscore the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the prosecution of terrorism related offences and ensuring that individuals involved in or supporting terrorist activities are held accountable under the law.
Further details on the cases and court proceedings are expected as the trials continue.
