Nigeria’s real gross domestic product grew by 4.43 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday. The figure marks an improvement on the 4.23 per cent recorded in the same period of 2025.
The services sector led the expansion with growth of 4.60 per cent, up from 3.94 per cent a year earlier. It also slightly increased its share of the economy, accounting for 56.62 per cent of real GDP compared with 56.53 per cent in the second quarter of 2025. Agriculture grew by 4.39 per cent, a notable rise from the 2.82 per cent posted in the corresponding quarter of 2025. Industry, however, slowed to 3.96 per cent from 7.46 per cent the previous year.
In nominal terms, aggregate GDP at basic prices reached ₦119.29 trillion, compared with ₦100.73 trillion in the second quarter of 2025. That represents year-on-year nominal growth of 18.43 per cent.
Oil production improved during the quarter. Average daily output stood at 1.72 million barrels per day, higher than the 1.68 million barrels recorded in the second quarter of 2025 and the 1.55 million barrels in the first quarter of 2026. The oil sector itself expanded by 7.31 per cent year-on-year in real terms.
While this was substantially lower than the 20.46 per cent growth seen in the second quarter of 2025, it represented an acceleration from the 2.57 per cent recorded in the first quarter of 2026. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, oil sector output rose by 10.91 per cent. The sector’s contribution to real GDP edged up to 4.16 per cent from 4.05 per cent a year earlier and 3.92 per cent in the preceding quarter.
The non-oil economy grew by 4.31 per cent in real terms. This was 0.67 percentage points higher than the 3.64 per cent recorded in the second quarter of 2025 and also above the 3.94 per cent posted in the first quarter of 2026. Growth was driven primarily by crop production within agriculture, telecommunications, real estate, trade, financial institutions, cement manufacturing and construction.
The non-oil sector’s share of real GDP stood at 95.84 per cent, slightly lower than the 95.95 per cent recorded a year earlier and the 96.08 per cent seen in the first quarter of 2026.
The figures form part of the National Bureau of Statistics’ regular quarterly GDP series and provide the latest official snapshot of economic performance across key sectors.
