The Labour Party (LP) candidate for the Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections, Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has blamed Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions on the All Progressives Congress (APC), which took over power in 2015.
In a press statement issued in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Tuesday, Ezeh criticized the APC leadership, describing its members as incompetent individuals lacking character. According to him, the ruling party has only contributed to the country’s decline rather than fostering development.
Ezeh’s remarks came in response to an award recently presented to Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, by Silverbird Communications, which recognized him as the best-performing minister in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
While congratulating Umahi on his recognition, Ezeh, an Oxford-trained entrepreneur, acknowledged the minister’s political influence, noting that his impact would be felt in the 2027 general elections, both in Ebonyi State and across the country.
Ezeh expressed surprise that the few high-performing officials in the current administration were originally from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He argued that the APC had eroded the developmental strides made under the PDP-led government before 2015.
“Let me congratulate His Excellency, Engr. Senator Dave Nweze Umahi, on this well-deserved award as the best-performing minister in Tinubu’s cabinet.
“Interestingly, the few competent officials in this administration all came from the PDP. The APC is filled with individuals who lack the ability to build anything meaningful. Since taking over in 2015, they have destroyed everything handed to them. Nigeria, as we knew it, ended in 2015—simple!”
Ezeh also reflected on Umahi’s political influence in Ebonyi, stating that he controls all key political access points in the state. He dismissed those who underestimate the former governor, emphasizing his strategic political maneuvering.
“Today, in Ebonyi politics, Umahi holds all four access points. He recognized the weakness of the old political class, their greed, and their lack of vision, and he capitalized on it. Unless the current governor makes a drastic shift, Umahi will remain a dominant force in 2027.”
In a veiled jab at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Ezeh compared his leadership style to Umahi’s, asserting that the former Ebonyi governor operates with greater strategic foresight.
“You cannot compare my brother, Engr. Dave Umahi, to the overly talkative Nyesom Wike. Umahi is calculative—he never enters a fight unprepared. If Dave were in Wike’s position, he would have pretended to be humble, made peace with power brokers, and then struck when the time was right. Wike, on the other hand, is too abrasive.”
“If Wike wants to remain politically relevant, he should take lessons from Umahi before it’s too late.”
Ezeh also advised Governor Francis Nwifuru to focus on evidence-based governance rather than political distractions. He urged the governor to prioritize data-driven policies that would bring tangible development to the state.
“Governor Nwifuru should concentrate on governance and avoid being drawn into unnecessary political conflicts with his predecessor. Ebonyi needs leaders who can deliver results, not emotional governance.”
Ezeh’s comments underscore the ongoing power struggles and shifting political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections, as key players position themselves for greater influence.
