The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has refuted claims linking its members to the killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting the incident occurred before its sit-at-home order was enforced.
IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, clarified in a statement that Gulak was killed on Sunday, May 30, 2021, while the group’s sit-at-home directive took effect the following day, Monday, May 31. He argued that the timeline clearly exonerates IPOB from any involvement in the incident.
Reacting to the presentation of Gulak’s death certificate during the ongoing trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Powerful dismissed the document as lacking any “evidentiary value” and described the prosecution’s case as “collapsed.”
He accused the prosecuting counsel, Awomolo SAN, of attempting to reintroduce evidence after concluding his examination-in-chief, calling it a “dishonest and unethical” legal maneuver intended to salvage a weak case.
“It is important to set the record straight: the sit-at-home observance declared by IPOB for the 30th May Remembrance Day in 2021 was held on Monday, 31st May 2021—not Sunday the 30th. Gulak was murdered on Sunday, a full day before the observance,” the statement read.
“The timeline alone dismantles the fabricated claim that IPOB had any involvement in his death. The attempt to retrofit this tragic event into their crumbling narrative is not just deceitful—it is criminal,” Powerful added.
He also accused the Nigerian government of manipulating events to persecute IPOB, likening the current situation to the historical framing of the 1966 coup as an “Igbo coup” which fueled the Nigerian Civil War.
Powerful called on the media to report objectively and reminded the public that a prosecution witness admitted under oath that no investigation report exists to support the charges against Kanu.
