The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has launched a major crackdown on alleged economic sabotage by shutting down the operations of Inner Galaxy Steel Company and Jiuxing Integrity Industrial Ltd over their suspected involvement in the vandalism and recycling of stolen railway infrastructure across Nigeria.
According to a statement released on Monday by NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, the action followed the discovery of what authorities described as a sophisticated criminal network accused of dismantling critical railway assets and converting them into steel products valued at billions of naira.
The Corps revealed that it obtained court orders authorising the immediate closure of the companies’ headquarters, branches and subsidiaries nationwide as investigations continue into allegations bordering on infrastructure theft, economic sabotage and terrorism financing.
The suspects linked to the network are being investigated for offences including conspiracy, theft, destruction of railway property, obstruction of railway services, concealment of stolen items and alleged support for terrorist activities.
Acting on court-approved warrants, operatives from the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad raided the companies’ facility located in Birnin Yero, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where large quantities of railway tracks and sleepers allegedly removed from national rail lines were recovered.
The recovered items were subsequently handed over to the Nigerian Railway Corporation as exhibits for prosecution.
Investigators disclosed that initial findings uncovered a large transportation and recycling network through which stolen railway materials were allegedly moved from different regions of the country to the companies’ facilities for melting and industrial processing.
The NSCDC stated that confessional statements allegedly obtained from some arrested workers indicated that the stolen railway components were regularly transported to the firms’ headquarters in Aba and other operational centres, where they were converted into roofing sheets, nails and other steel products for commercial sale.
Following the discoveries, the NSCDC extended the closure to the companies’ headquarters at Ahala Ukwa Village, Umuahala Community, Obuzor Ukwu in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, as well as another operational facility in Tasha Rawayyah, Gusau, Zamfara State.
Security officials described the operation as a significant breakthrough in efforts to combat organised economic crimes threatening Nigeria’s infrastructure and national security.
The Corps also disclosed that Chinese nationals associated with the management of the companies have been invited for questioning but have yet to appear before investigators.
NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, directed the head of the Special Intelligence Squad, Appollos Dandaura, to ensure a thorough and professional investigation into the matter.
Audi vowed that anyone found guilty would face the full weight of the law.
“Every single suspect found culpable in this bleeding of our nation’s commonwealth will face the full wrath of the law. The NSCDC remains fiercely committed to reducing infrastructure vandalism to the absolute minimum,” he said.
The Corps further praised the judiciary for swiftly granting the legal orders that helped secure critical evidence and urged Nigerians to continue providing credible intelligence to expose individuals involved in economic sabotage.
