Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, has attributed his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the party’s opposition to the creation of Anioma State.
Speaking in Asaba on Monday, Nwoko stated that he left the PDP to secure the ruling party’s support for the proposed state.
“The governor and former governor, who are the leaders of the PDP, are against the creation of Anioma State. I sought support from the PDP national leadership, but the National Working Committee was too divided to provide direction,” he said.
The senator also criticized Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, accusing him of hindering development projects in Delta North.
“The governor ensured I couldn’t function. He dismissed the projects we had planned during the campaign, citing a lack of funds. Key projects like the Okpai power plant and Ogwashi-Uku dam were abandoned. I wasn’t allowed to nominate board members, commissioners, or local government chairmen,” Nwoko alleged.
He emphasized that defecting to the ruling APC was necessary to bring development to his constituency, adding that time was running out for him to fulfill his campaign promises.
Nwoko’s defection to the APC was formally announced last week following what he described as irreconcilable differences with Governor Oborevwori and other PDP leaders in Delta State.
Reacting to his exit, Governor Oborevwori’s aide, Fred Oghenesivbe, claimed Nwoko left because he feared losing the PDP ticket for the 2027 elections.
Similarly, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, dismissed Nwoko’s defection as insignificant, recalling that he had previously defected to APGA in 2003 and the DPP in 2011, yet the PDP still won in both instances.
“Now that he has left, we are not bothered. The PDP will still win Delta North Senatorial District in 2027. Our focus remains on governance, not politics,” Aniagwu stated.
