Nigeria’s slow industrial growth has long been linked to one persistent challenge: unreliable electricity supply. Manufacturers across the country continue to depend heavily on alternative power sources to keep their operations running, a reality that has significantly increased production costs and reduced competitiveness.
Despite trillions of naira spent by successive governments to improve electricity generation and distribution, stable power supply remains largely elusive.
In Ogun State, however, the liberalisation of the energy sector has opened a new window of opportunity. Recognised as one of Nigeria’s leading industrial centres, the state is taking deliberate steps to secure a more reliable energy future through strategic investments in power infrastructure.
Under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s “Light Up Ogun” initiative, the administration has introduced several projects aimed at guaranteeing sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.
One of the flagship projects is the Onijanganjangan Independent Power Plant located on the outskirts of Abeokuta. The dual-fired plant is powered by both compressed gas and diesel, a structure designed to ensure continuous electricity supply even if gas distribution is disrupted.
The facility is expected to generate 34 megawatts of electricity to serve the Abeokuta metropolis, Oke-Mosan, government institutions, and surrounding public facilities.
The administration has also improved energy infrastructure around the Gateway International Airport with the installation of a one-megawatt gas-fired power system. The project is intended to provide uninterrupted electricity for airport operations, the ARISE development corridor, and nearby Customs facilities.
In further demonstration of the government’s commitment to achieving round-the-clock power supply, Governor Abiodun on April 6 inspected the four-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant at Oke-Mosan, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to deliver stable electricity to residents and businesses.
Notably, both the 34-megawatt Onijanganjangan facility and the four-megawatt Oke-Mosan plant were designed with expansion capacity, with long-term plans to scale generation up to 100 megawatts.
With these investments, Ogun State is positioning itself as an attractive destination for investors by promising reliable and affordable electricity supply — a critical factor for industrial growth and economic development.
As inventor Thomas Edison once famously said, “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.” Through its aggressive investment in the power sector, Ogun State hopes to turn that vision into reality for businesses and residents alike.
