Former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha has taken legal action against current Governor Hope Uzodimma over the latter’s plan to contest the Imo West Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections while still in office as governor.
Okorocha filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja. In an accompanying affidavit, he argues that Uzodimma’s second term as governor, which began when he was sworn in on 15 January 2024, runs until midnight on 14 January 2028.
Okorocha maintains that this means Uzodimma’s tenure as governor will still be in force when the next National Assembly is inaugurated after the 2027 general elections. He further alleges that the governor has already obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms and is seeking the party’s ticket for the Imo West seat.
The dispute marks a further escalation in the long-running political rivalry between the two men. Okorocha previously represented Imo West in the Senate and views the district as a core part of his political base. Uzodimma’s reported interest in the seat is seen by some observers as a possible next step after completing his time as governor.
Relations between the two have rarely been cordial, and the current legal challenge adds a formal dimension to their contest for influence in Imo State ahead of 2027.
The Federal High Court in Abuja will determine the outcome of Okorocha’s suit. The case centres on whether a sitting governor can validly seek a senatorial seat while his gubernatorial tenure remains uncompleted under the constitution.
