Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma’s spokesman has rejected an appeal by Afrobeats star Davido over the Osun governorship election, describing it as misplaced and “emotional blackmail.”
In a statement signed by Ambrose Nwaogwugwu and released on August 5, 2026, the aide said Davido’s intervention was directed at the wrong person. Uzodimma, who chairs the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council for the August 15 poll, has no power to decide the outcome of the election, the statement stressed.
“His appeal should be directed to the people of Osun State, who are the ones that will ultimately decide the outcome of the election through their votes,” Nwaogwugwu said.
The spokesman dismissed suggestions that Davido approached Uzodimma because the governor’s wife, Chioma, hails from Imo State, calling the reasoning “rather pedestrian.” He maintained that Uzodimma has consistently advocated peace and remains committed to a free and credible process while campaigning for the APC candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO).
Nwaogwugwu went further, asserting that incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, had “failed woefully” in office and that voters across Osun were prepared to remove him. He advised the singer to “concentrate on helping his uncle prepare for life after office” rather than trying to influence Uzodimma through emotional appeals. The statement added a pointed suggestion that Davido begin preparations to “officially sign his uncle as a dancer in his musical band,” given the prevailing mood of the electorate.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026. The contest pits the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the APC in what is widely expected to be a closely fought race.
The exchange follows earlier reports that Davido had publicly appealed to Uzodimma ahead of the poll. It also comes amid separate controversy over alleged restrictions placed on an Osun State government account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), an issue Davido had previously commented on.
