The Oyo State Police Command has arrested four suspects linked to the abduction of Mrs. Busayo John-Paul, younger sister of former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons.
The victims were kidnapped on June 3 while Mrs. John-Paul was driving her children to school along Elewura Street, off Ring Road, Ibadan, at about 7:30 a.m. They were rescued unharmed on June 6 following a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abimbola Olugbenga, disclosed the development during an inspection of the kidnappers’ hideout at Araromi Quarters, Ayegun North, in Oluyole Local Government Area. He said the rescue was executed by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), the Oyo State Police Command, and other tactical units.
The operation, which followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, led to the arrest of Wale Abolalewa, popularly known as Oloro, Dare Oyedele, alias Solution, Semiu Ishola, 39, Adeyemi Ayobami, 35.
One gang member, identified as Kelechi who acted as a lookout, and another unidentified suspect were neutralised during the raid after they opened fire on security operatives. Some other gang members reportedly escaped and may have sustained gunshot injuries.
Police investigations revealed that the kidnappers had monitored the family’s movements for weeks and attempted to recruit an insider from the household. Items recovered from the hideout include three pump-action rifles, 14 live cartridges, an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla used in the abduction, criminal charms, a battle axe, a hammer, suspected hard drugs, and two face masks.
The Commissioner appealed to hospitals, healthcare workers, traditional bone setters, and the general public to report any individuals seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.
Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the remaining fleeing suspects continue. The victims have since been reunited with their family.
