A senior Peoples Democratic Party figure has argued that President Bola Tinubu is better placed to win the 2027 presidential election than he was in 2023, pointing to the president’s record in office and his success in drawing opposition politicians into his orbit.
Lere Olayinka made the claim in an interview on TVC Breakfast on Monday. He said Tinubu’s combination of governance results and political outreach had turned the next contest into what he described as a “one-way election.”
“The reason this election of 2027 will be a one-way election is because of the performance of the president in terms of national development and his performance in terms of politics, because this election is going to be the easiest,” Olayinka said. “It will be much easier for the president than the 2023 election. That is a fact that most people are not willing to accept.”
He singled out Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who remains a PDP member yet works closely with the Tinubu administration. Olayinka argued that Wike’s influence might otherwise have been used to bolster the PDP.
“If Wike was not working with the president, probably he would have been galvanizing more support for the PDP. Now he is not. The president has been able to bring him and other people to himself,” he said.
Olayinka also pointed to the potential impact of other opposition figures backing separate platforms. He cited Abia State Governor Alex Otti in connection with the Labour Party and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke in connection with the Accord Party, suggesting that fragmented opposition support would further ease Tinubu’s path.
By reaching across party lines, Olayinka added, Tinubu had simplified both governance and the political contest facing him.
Olayinka’s comments come as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls. Wike’s continued cooperation with the ruling party while retaining his PDP membership has been a recurring point of tension within opposition ranks.
