Diran Odeyemi, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has threatened to initiate a recall process against Hon. Wole Oke, the House of Representatives member representing Ijesa North (Obokun/Oriade) Federal Constituency, following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oke, a fifth-term lawmaker, formally resigned from the PDP in a letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to his Ward 7 Chairman in Obokun Local Government Area. His defection ends a long-standing affiliation with the PDP.
Speaking on a current affairs programme on Rave FM, Osogbo, Oke justified his move by claiming the PDP had lost its political strength in his constituency. He also criticized political appointees from the area under Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, describing them as both politically and financially weak.
In response, Odeyemi, in a statement, challenged Oke to resign his seat and seek a fresh mandate under his new party.
“We thank him for leaving. But on behalf of PDP leaders in the constituency, I challenge him to resign and request INEC to conduct a fresh election. Let him test his popularity under a different platform,” Odeyemi said.
He warned that failure to do so would trigger a formal recall process by the constituents.
Odeyemi downplayed the impact of Oke’s exit, describing it as a relief rather than a loss.
“The coming months will reveal his real worth to his new political allies. We’re not losing an asset but offloading a liability that has slowed our progress,” he added.
He accused Oke of betraying the PDP from within, alleging that the lawmaker had been leaking party strategies to APC figures.
Odeyemi reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to supporting Governor Adeleke’s re-election bid in 2026, insisting the party remains united and strong in the constituency despite the defection.
