Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has claimed that veteran journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, will abandon former Vice President Atiku Abubakar once financial benefits cease.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Olayinka accused Momodu of loyalty driven by personal gain, stating: “We are hearing all this noise from him because Atiku is paying his bills. Let Atiku stop paying, and Oga Dele Momodu will move on to his next victim.”
Momodu had earlier stated on Arise Television that a strong Northern candidate could challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. He also downplayed speculation that Atiku might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Responding to the interview, Olayinka criticized Momodu for allegedly misrepresenting facts, particularly the claim that Atiku had intended for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cede the 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast.
“It’s laughable that Dele Momodu, a supposed journalist, would go on national television to claim Atiku wanted the PDP to zone its presidential ticket to the Southeast, yet he had already obtained the party’s Expression of Interest form before any zoning decision was made,” Olayinka said.
He further accused Momodu of spreading misinformation, questioning: “Was it Wike who forced Peter Obi out of the PDP? Did Wike make Senator Gbenga Daniel, Director General of Atiku’s 2019 campaign, leave the party? Was it Wike that drove out Atiku’s 2023 running mate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa?”
Olayinka also pointed to other high-profile exits from the PDP, including former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel and his successor, Governor Umo Eno, suggesting that Atiku’s leadership style was the common factor behind the departures.
He added, “The question is, why do key figures who worked closely with Atiku during the 2019 and 2023 elections abandon him afterward? The answer is simple — he is a self-centered politician.”
Referring to Momodu’s remarks about Wike’s alleged disregard for the Southeast, Olayinka stated, “Wike is a proud Ikwerre man, unlike Dele Momodu who seems ashamed of his Edo roots.”
Reaffirming his criticism of Atiku’s role in the party, Olayinka concluded: “Atiku has been the weapon fashioned against the PDP since he frustrated the party’s attempt to win Lagos in 2003.”
