Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Uche Secondus, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weaponising the judiciary to weaken opposition parties and foist a one-party system on Nigeria.
Secondus issued the strong warning in reaction to a recent Federal High Court decision by Justice Peter Lifu, which deregistered several political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The ruling came midway into the political cycle, after the affected parties had already conducted their primary elections and fielded candidates for the upcoming polls.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, Secondus described the development as a “dangerous assault” on multi-party democracy, citizen participation, and the rule of law. He argued that deregistering parties at this critical stage effectively disenfranchises voters, destabilises the political process, and narrows the democratic space.
“They are afraid of the election; they want a coronation,” Secondus said, accusing the federal government of deliberately undermining opposition parties to eliminate competition.
The former PDP chairman further condemned what he termed “judicial rascality,” saying the move creates unnecessary vacuums, chills healthy political competition, and favours the entrenched political establishment at the expense of grassroots movements and alternative ideas.
“A robust democracy requires a low barrier to entry for alternative ideas,” he stated. “By dismantling smaller or emerging parties mid-cycle, the system locks out the very forces needed for a vibrant and inclusive democratic process.”
Secondus warned that if left unchecked, such actions could erode democratic gains and push Nigeria towards a one-party dominance that stifles effective opposition and genuine choice for citizens.
