The Coalition of Political Parties has accused leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of covertly supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This allegation was made in a statement released on Wednesday by Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the APC. Lukman’s remarks came in response to the PDP Governors’ Forum’s decision to oppose the formation of a broad-based coalition of opposition parties, politicians, and civil society groups.
According to Lukman, the proposed coalition is essential not only to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC but also to salvage Nigeria’s fragile democracy.
He argued that the alliance is crucial to restoring the integrity of the country’s political institutions, particularly the role of political parties in fostering genuine political competition.
Lukman criticized the PDP, which governed Nigeria for 16 years, saying the party has become a shadow of itself. “Nothing illustrates the tragic decline of Nigeria’s democracy more than the PDP, which once bragged about ruling for 60 years but now operates as a political shell,” he said.
He went further to describe many PDP leaders as “Trojan horses” working for the APC from within. “All patriotic Nigerians must realize that the crisis we face goes beyond loyalty to dysfunctional parties like the PDP. Many of its leaders are either beneficiaries of APC appointments or clandestine backers of the ruling government,” Lukman stated.
He questioned the direction of the opposition party, alleging that its leadership is actively steering it toward political irrelevance. “It is senseless to waste time and resources on a party whose leadership is complicit in its own downfall,” he added.
Lukman reiterated that the proposed coalition is not just about winning elections but about rebuilding Nigeria’s democratic institutions from the ground up.
