The South-South zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into turmoil following a controversial meeting convened by the party’s zonal leadership in Benin, Edo State, on February 15.
The meeting, called by PDP South-South National Vice-Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, has sparked internal tensions, with some party leaders questioning its legitimacy.
On Thursday, the South-South Zonal Secretary of the PDP, Chief Felix Omemu, condemned the planned gathering, describing it as illegal and urging party members to boycott it.
In a statement, Omemu argued that the meeting violated the PDP Constitution, which stipulates that the Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) can only be convened with approval from the Zonal Working Committee (ZWC). According to him, no such approval had been granted.
“In line with Section 26 (2c) of our party’s Constitution as amended in 2017, there was no time that the Zonal Working Committee, being a precursor to the Zonal Executive Committee, agreed on any reports to be discussed at Saturday’s scheduled meeting,” Omemu stated.
He distanced himself from the gathering, insisting that the meeting was unauthorized and called solely by Chief Orbih.
Omemu further alleged that the meeting could harm the party’s interests and urged PDP stakeholders in the zone to boycott it.
“I also call on my colleagues in the zone to avoid Saturday’s meeting, whose agenda remains suspicious and may not serve the general interest of the party. It is clear that the majority of the leaders in the zone were not consulted before this meeting was scheduled,” he said.
He called on key PDP figures including South-South governors, former governors, National Assembly members, State Assembly principal officers, National Working Committee members, and state chairmen to intervene and prevent what he described as an “illegal” meeting.
“I urge the leaders of the party in the zone to call Chief Orbih to order to avoid any negative consequences that could arise from allowing an unauthorized meeting to be held,” Omemu warned.
The development signals growing divisions within the PDP’s South-South bloc, potentially deepening the party’s internal crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
