The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, stating that it is on the verge of collapse.
Obi made this assertion on Monday during the 60th birthday colloquium of former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha. His remarks were in response to the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Drawing from his own experience, Obi recalled how the federal government attempted to intervene when he was impeached as governor of Anambra State. He was removed from office by the Anambra State House of Assembly on November 2, 2006, but reinstated by the court in February 2007 after challenging the impeachment. According to Obi, then-President Olusegun Obasanjo sent a delegation to dissuade the lawmakers from proceeding with the impeachment.
Obi lamented that Nigeria’s democracy, which had been progressing since 1999, is now being undermined by the current administration.
“Some people came and knocked everything down. That is the situation we are in now. Nothing works. I became a governor through the court when President Obasanjo and Atiku were in government. I did not pay the court one naira. I was sitting in my office when the court declared me the winner. That can’t happen in Nigeria today,” he said.
Speaking further, Obi criticized the federal government’s handling of Fubara’s situation, contrasting it with how his impeachment was handled.
“When I was being impeached, the president sent people to intervene on my behalf. Ken Nnamani came, pleading with the House of Assembly not to remove me. Today, the president (Tinubu) is the one orchestrating an impeachment,” he alleged.
