The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on security agencies to prosecute suspects arrested in connection with the recent attacks in Plateau State within the state, rather than transferring them to Abuja.
The appeal comes in the wake of renewed violence in Plateau communities, where over 100 people were killed and properties destroyed in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas.
Speaking on behalf of the four NBA branches in Plateau State — Jos, Bukuru, Pankshin, and Shendam — Chairperson of the Jos Branch, Barr. Leah Dagung, addressed journalists on Tuesday, expressing the association’s deep concern over the security situation.
Dagung emphasized the need for justice to be served transparently and locally.
“All perpetrators arrested should be prosecuted here in Plateau, not taken to Abuja where we no longer hear about the cases, suggesting they may have been quietly released,” she said.
The NBA also advocated for the establishment of state police, fully equipped to defend local communities.
“States should be allowed to set up their own police forces armed with the necessary weapons to protect residents. In the absence of sufficient federal security presence, communities should be empowered with self-defense mechanisms and equipment,” Dagung added.
She further called on the federal government to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation support for victims and displaced persons.
“The Nigerian Bar Association in Plateau will not remain silent while our communities are turned into killing fields,” she declared. “We will continue to use all legal and moral avenues available to seek justice, accountability, and lasting peace for our people.”
