The Nigeria Police Force has formally invited popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and summoned Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Moshood Jimoh for questioning over allegations raised by the activist against the senior officer.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, the police confirmed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), Abuja, has invited AIG Jimoh to respond to the claims. The Force CID also issued a formal letter of invitation to Otse on 30 July 2026, directing him to appear and provide evidence in support of the public statements he made.
According to the police, these steps form part of the Force’s internal accountability mechanisms. The statement emphasised that credible allegations of misconduct are investigated without regard to the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant. The Force stressed that no officer is above the law and that genuine complaints are not ignored.
The invitation followed recent public comments by VDM concerning the AIG in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, and a related criminal matter. Police sources indicated that the criminal case referenced by the activist has already been thoroughly investigated. Following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the matter was filed before a court of competent jurisdiction. The Force described the case as subjudice and insisted it would not be litigated through media campaigns or public commentary.
“The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” the statement read. It added that disciplinary processes within the Nigeria Police Force are strictly guided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other established administrative procedures. These rules, the Force noted, apply equally to all officers regardless of rank or position.
While acknowledging citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and the legitimate demand for accountability from public institutions, the police cautioned that such rights do not extend to defamation or the making of unverified allegations capable of damaging the reputation of individuals or the institution. The Force urged Otse to honour the invitation extended by the Force CID and to participate fully in the investigative process. It further called on the public to allow the court to determine the outcome of the separate criminal matter without external pressure.
The statement assured Nigerians that any officer found culpable after due investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law. Conversely, it warned that deliberately false allegations made with the intention of damaging the reputation of an officer or the Police Force could attract legal consequences.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains an institution founded on law, discipline and accountability. No officer is above the law, and no genuine complaint is ignored; nor will any officer be sanctioned outside the procedures the law prescribes,” the police declared.
