The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called on governors in northern Nigeria to stop playing politics with the future of children by closing schools during Ramadan.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, the PRP criticized the recent decision by the governors of Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi states to shut down schools during the holy month.
Ishaq condemned the move, stating that it disrupts students’ academic progress and violates their right to quality education.
“It is concerning that governors with advanced academic qualifications—such as Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina, who holds a PhD in Agriculture and Rural Sociology, and Nasir Idris of Kebbi, who has a PhD in Education—would prioritize political considerations over the educational needs of their people.
“How can a government led by highly educated individuals justify shutting down schools at a time when learning should continue uninterrupted? This decision contradicts their own experiences, as many of these leaders attended school during Ramadan without any disruptions,” Ishaq stated.
The PRP noted that the affected states already face a severe education crisis, with an average out-of-school rate of 44%, far exceeding the national average. The statement warned that school closures during Ramadan would further exacerbate this problem, deepening the learning gap in a region already struggling with poor performance in national examinations and high dropout rates.
While acknowledging the significance of Ramadan, the party emphasized that education and religious observance are not mutually exclusive. It pointed out that countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates manage to balance academics with spirituality by adjusting school hours rather than shutting down learning institutions.
“If these nations can successfully maintain educational activities during Ramadan, there is no justification for northern Nigerian states to take a different approach that compromises children’s learning,” the PRP added.
The party, therefore, urged the governors of Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi to reconsider their decision and adopt policies that safeguard both education and religious practices. It called for an immediate reversal of the school closures and a collaborative effort to ensure students’ learning is not sacrificed for political convenience.
