The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s accusations of selective election conduct in filling vacant legislative seats.
Governor Fubara recently criticized INEC for allegedly failing to hold elections to replace lawmakers who defected from one political party to another, particularly in the case of the Rivers State House of Assembly crisis.
In a statement on Friday, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, dismissed the claims, stating that the governor failed to provide specific instances of selective action by the Commission.
The crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly has seen 27 lawmakers defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to a prolonged political standoff.
INEC acknowledged the situation but clarified that it cannot conduct elections for the affected seats because the matter is currently before the courts.
“The Commission has been joined in multiple lawsuits filed at various courts, including the Supreme Court,” the statement read. “Until a final judicial decision is made, any attempt to conduct elections in this circumstance would be futile and a waste of public resources.”
INEC also cautioned public officials against making statements that could mislead the public or undermine institutions, emphasizing the need for due process in resolving the matter.
