U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate a deal with the United States over the ongoing war with Russia, warning that continued American support is conditional.
Trump made the statement on Friday during a meeting with Zelensky at the Oval Office, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution.
“Make a deal, or we’re out,” Trump reportedly told Zelensky, signaling a shift in U.S. policy toward the conflict.
Zelensky, who has repeatedly stated that there should be “no compromises” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, pushed back against the idea of making concessions. However, Trump insisted that Kyiv would need to negotiate in order to secure a peace settlement.
BBC correspondent Tom Bateman described the moment as “perhaps the most critical political and diplomatic moment for Zelensky since Russia’s full-scale invasion.”
The talks come just a week after Zelensky accused Trump of engaging in a war of words over who bears responsibility for the nearly three-year conflict. While Russia has supported Trump’s calls for a peace deal, Zelensky has maintained that any agreement made without Ukraine’s involvement would not be honored.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, sparking an ongoing war that has led to thousands of casualties and widespread destruction.
