Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported that a Russian Shahed-type drone struck a facility linked to spent nuclear fuel storage close to the Chornobyl nuclear complex in northern Ukraine. He described the incident as a “deliberate and deeply reckless attack.”
The strike targeted infrastructure associated with handling spent nuclear material, specifically damaging a fuel reception building located roughly 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the site of the 1986 disaster.
According to Ukraine’s state nuclear operator, Energoatom, no spent fuel was present in the affected structure at the time of the strike. Emergency crews quickly extinguished a fire that broke out after the impact, and no casualties have been reported. Authorities have confirmed there has been no rise in radiation levels, which remain at normal background readings. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been briefed on the damage and plans to send inspectors to assess the extent of the impact and verify safety conditions at the site.
This is not the first reported incident involving the Chornobyl area during the ongoing war. Earlier in 2025, a Russian drone reportedly damaged the protective containment structure covering the destroyed reactor. Both Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly accused each other of endangering nuclear facilities, including Europe’s largest plant at Zaporizhzhia, which remains under Russian control.
The Russian government has not issued an official response to the latest strike, while Zelenskyy warned of increasing risks to critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
