The Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics has vowed to provide robust legislative backing to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as part of intensified efforts to curb the rising menace of drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
The commitment was made on Monday when the committee’s Chairman, Senator Joseph Ikpea, paid a courtesy visit to NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Senator Ikpea assured the NDLEA of the Senate’s readiness to enact necessary laws and policy reforms that would strengthen drug control measures, expand rehabilitation programmes, and scale up public awareness campaigns, particularly targeting young Nigerians.
“Our children who have gone into drug abuse need to be rehabilitated, while others must be prevented from falling into the trap through sustained sensitisation and awareness programmes,” Ikpea said. He described the visit as an opportunity to forge a closer partnership and gain deeper insight into the agency’s ongoing operations.
The senator commended Marwa’s track record of public service, describing him as a “committed and result-oriented leader,” and reaffirmed the National Assembly’s willingness to provide all necessary legislative interventions to address the growing drug challenge.
In his response, Marwa highlighted drug abuse and trafficking as significant drivers of social instability and security threats both in Nigeria and the wider region. He noted the NDLEA’s recent successes, including the dismantling of major drug cartels, high-profile arrests, and the seizure of assets linked to illicit drug activities.
Marwa credited the progress to continued support from the Presidency, the National Assembly, and the judiciary, and reiterated the agency’s balanced approach to reducing both the supply and demand for illicit drugs.
He expressed optimism that the Senate committee’s leadership would further bolster national efforts against the drug scourge.
