The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has condemned the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as a further setback for women’s representation in Nigeria’s Senate.
Speaking in Calabar during a press briefing on activities marking this year’s women’s celebration, the President of NCWS in Cross River State, Chief Majorie Asuquo, expressed concern over the impact of Natasha’s suspension but declined further comments, citing ongoing legal proceedings.
“The suspension has further reduced the already low number of female senators from four to three in a 109-member Senate,” she lamented. “This is yet another example of the marginalization of women, which we have consistently spoken against.”
Echoing her concerns, the pioneer NCWS president in the state, Rev. Grace Ekanem, criticized the gender imbalance in political appointments, stressing the urgent need for equal representation.
She also highlighted the importance of girl-child education, urging parents to prioritize education over early marriage. “With proper education, women can support their husbands, build strong homes, and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.
