The Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro, on Thursday raised alarm on the floor of the Nigerian Senate over renewed attacks on communities in his constituency by suspected herdsmen.
Senator Moro, while moving a motion titled “Herdsmen Attacks on Akpete/Ojantele Communities of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District: Urgent Need for Senate’s Intervention”, decried the increasing wave of violence that has left several residents dead and properties worth millions destroyed.
He cited the latest incidents in Akpete and Ojantele communities in Apa Local Government Area, where suspected herdsmen launched deadly attacks on May 1 and 7, 2025, respectively.
According to the senator, “No fewer than thirteen people, who were going about their daily activities, were brutally murdered. These attacks are part of a disturbing trend of killings and kidnappings across communities in Benue South.”
Expressing dismay over the continued loss of lives and property, Senator Moro lamented that none of the perpetrators had been apprehended so far.
In response, the Senate resolved to:
- Urge the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to justice;
- Call on the Federal Government to deploy comprehensive surveillance in the affected areas to prevent further attacks;
- Mandate the police and other security outfits to review their operational strategies to ensure more proactive and effective security coverage;
- Request the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to displaced persons in Akpete and Ojantele;
- Observe a one-minute silence in honour of the victims of the recent and previous attacks.
Senator Moro emphasized the need for immediate and decisive action, stressing that the people of Benue South deserve to live in peace and security, free from the constant threat of violence.
