Suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has denied violating a court order restraining her from speaking publicly or posting on social media about her allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reaction comes in response to a fresh application filed by Akpabio’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit seeks an order compelling the embattled senator to delete a satirical video she shared on Facebook on April 27, which they argue breaches a judge’s directive.
In the viral video, Akpoti-Uduaghan mockingly “apologised” to Akpabio, stating she was sorry “for the crime of maintaining dignity and self-respect” and sarcastically regretted not allowing the Senate President to “have his way” with her. The video drew widespread attention online and was seen by many as a direct jab at Akpabio amidst ongoing tensions between the two lawmakers.
The conflict stems from an earlier incident where Natasha accused Akpabio of making inappropriate advances following a disagreement over Senate seating arrangements.
In a counter-affidavit, Akpoti-Uduaghan refuted the allegations raised in Akpabio’s motion, describing them as “misleading, inaccurate, and not reflective of the true state of affairs.”
She argued that the April 27 post, titled “Satirical Apology Letter,” neither referenced the court case nor contained any material sub judice. Instead, she described it as political commentary protected under Section 39(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression.
“The post could not and did not prejudice ongoing proceedings. The applicant has not provided any evidence of actual or likely prejudice,” she stated.
She also accused Akpabio’s legal counsel, Mr. Monday Ubani, SAN, of commenting on the case via his own Facebook page on May 4, where he allegedly vilified her.
Natasha insisted that the motion against her was driven by malice and aimed at intimidating and silencing her for exercising her constitutional rights.
She further urged the court to strike out the application, maintaining that it was riddled with legal conclusions and extraneous claims.
