Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Luanda, Angola, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the high-level summit will centre on strategies for conflict resolution and the advancement of lasting peace and stability across Africa.
Shettima is expected to join other African leaders and key stakeholders in the Angolan capital to deliberate on practical solutions to regional security challenges and strengthen collective efforts towards conflict prevention and resolution.
The statement noted that Nigeria will contribute to discussions on strengthening continental mechanisms for preventing conflicts, resolving disputes and sustaining peace, given the country’s continued role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution across the continent and beyond.
Accompanied by senior defence and security officials, the Vice President will deliver President Tinubu’s address at the summit. The address is expected to outline Nigeria’s position on the issues under consideration and reaffirm the country’s commitment to peace and stability in Africa.
“The high-level summit will focus on critical strategies for conflict resolution and the advancement of lasting peace and stability across the African continent,” the statement said. It added that Shettima “will join African leaders and other key stakeholders converging on the Angolan capital to discuss practical solutions to regional security challenges and strengthen collective efforts towards conflict prevention and resolution.”
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in Angola.
