The Supreme Court has scheduled March 10, 2025, to hear the appeal filed by embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, challenging his removal from office.
A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, fixed the date on Tuesday while ruling on a motion for accelerated hearing submitted by Anyanwu.
In December 2024, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu upheld a High Court ruling that removed Anyanwu as PDP’s National Secretary. The appellate court also affirmed Chief Ude Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the party.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Ridwan Abdullahi ruled that Anyanwu’s appeal lacked merit, stating that he had violated the PDP constitution by holding onto the position after contesting as the party’s governorship candidate in the 2024 Imo State election.
Unhappy with the decision, Anyanwu took his case to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the rulings of both lower courts and reclaim his position. He also filed a motion for accelerated hearing, citing the critical role of the National Secretary in party affairs.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted the motion and ordered that court processes be served on the respondent, Mr. Aniagu Emmanuel, who must file his reply within three days of service. Anyanwu was given two days to respond on points of law.
The apex court, however, did not hear the motion for a stay of execution of the appellate court’s judgment, contrary to some media reports.
The substantive appeal is now set for hearing on March 10, 2025.
