The Nigerian government has stated that the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, from Finland will proceed at the appropriate time.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, revealed that Ekpa is currently under investigation by Finnish authorities on terrorism-related charges. He noted that following the conclusion of the investigation, Ekpa would be extradited to Nigeria to face trial.
Fagbemi made the disclosure on Thursday during a special event in Abuja, providing an update on ongoing diplomatic and legal efforts to secure Ekpa’s return.
“Nigeria is actively collaborating with the Finnish government on this matter,” he said. “Ekpa has committed offenses both in Finland and Nigeria. His extradition will happen at the right time.”
Ekpa has been accused of sponsoring violent attacks in Nigeria’s Southeast region, often linked to unknown gunmen. Authorities believe he has been exploiting the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to incite unrest.
In November 2024, Finnish police arrested Ekpa alongside four others. While the others were later released, his case was forwarded to Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General, who is currently reviewing whether to formally press charges.
