As the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumes on Tuesday, four additional Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) have joined his legal team.
The case, which is set to continue before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 29, has drawn increased legal firepower with the inclusion of prominent legal figures: Prof. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN; Emeka Etiaba, SAN; Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN; and Dr. Joseph Akubo, SAN.
This update was disclosed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in a notice addressed to the court, notifying it of the presence of lawyers, family members, and supporters who will be in attendance during the proceedings.
The statement reads in part:
“UPDATE: In addition to Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, and Uchenna Njoku, SAN, four more SANs have joined MAZI NNAMDI KANU’s legal team. They are Prof. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN; Emeka Etiaba, SAN; Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN; and Dr. Joseph Akubo, SAN. They will all be in court on April 29, May 2, and May 6.”
At the last sitting, Justice Omotosho approved an accelerated hearing of the seven-count terrorism charge against Kanu, noting the prolonged duration of the case, which has now spanned nearly a decade.
Kanu was initially arrested on October 14, 2015, upon his return from the United Kingdom, and was later granted bail in 2017 on health grounds after being held at the Kuje Correctional Centre. He subsequently fled to Europe but was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and extradited to Nigeria.
Despite multiple court rulings discharging and acquitting him of various charges, the Nigerian government has continued to detain him.
Previously, Kanu had called for the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako, citing a lack of confidence in her impartiality. The case was eventually reassigned to Justice Omotosho after Nyako stepped down from the matter.
