The Chairman of the Gwer West Traditional Council and Ter Tyoshin, His Royal Highness Daniel Abomtse, has urged the Federal Government to urgently address the ongoing attacks by armed herdsmen that have ravaged Benue communities for over 15 years.
Speaking in Naka, headquarters of the Gwer West Local Government Area, during a visit by officials from the Benue State Government, the monarch decried the unrelenting violence that has left thousands displaced and entire communities in ruins.
The government delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, was in the area on Tuesday to distribute relief materials to victims of recent attacks.
According to BSEMA’s Information Officer, Tema Ager, the team also paid a condolence visit to the monarch, whose palace was recently destroyed by enraged youths protesting the continuous killings.
Chief Abomtse praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his swift and compassionate response to the crisis, noting that while the state government has shown commitment, the scale of the insecurity calls for federal intervention.
“For more than a decade, terrorists masquerading as herdsmen have made life unbearable for my people,” he lamented. “We appreciate the efforts of the state government, but this is clearly a national emergency that requires decisive federal action.”
He also thanked BSEMA for the humanitarian support and called for long-term solutions to enable displaced persons to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
In delivering the governor’s message, Sir Iorpuu condemned the attack on the monarch’s palace, describing it as “unprecedented and strange in Tivland,” and assured the traditional ruler of the government’s ongoing support for peace and recovery initiatives.
Relief materials—including food and non-food items—were distributed to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Agagbe, UBE Naka, and at the Calvin Foundation College of Education Clinic.
Iorpuu reaffirmed Governor Alia’s commitment to restoring normalcy in Gwer West and ensuring the safe return of all displaced persons. He added that future interventions would be closely coordinated with community leaders and local government officials.
