President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of esteemed Nigerian writer, Mabel Segun, who died on Thursday, just weeks after marking her 95th birthday.
In a statement on Friday, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, conveyed the President’s condolences to Segun’s family, the literary community, her friends, and admirers across Nigeria.
“Mabel Segun’s extraordinary and lasting contributions to Nigeria’s literary landscape are undeniable,” Tinubu stated, recognizing her pivotal role in shaping children’s literature and mentoring generations of writers.
A trailblazer in the field, Segun founded the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria in 1978 and later established the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in Ibadan in 1990, solidifying her influence in literary development.
Her debut book, My Father’s Daughter, published in 1965, garnered international acclaim and continues to inspire writers, students, and literary enthusiasts.
Describing her as an “illustrious writer,” Tinubu lauded her enduring legacy, affirming that her works will remain a cornerstone of Nigeria’s literary heritage.
The President prayed for the repose of her soul and strength for her loved ones during this time of mourning.
