Nigerian troops have intensified counterterrorism efforts in the Northwest, storming multiple terrorist hideouts in Sokoto and Zamfara States under the ongoing Operation FANSAR YANMA Phase V.
The large-scale military offensive targeted insurgent strongholds in Gidan Madi, Tsamiya Village, Tudun Ruwa, Alela, and the notorious Goboro Forest — long considered a sanctuary for armed groups in the region.
Security sources said the troops encountered fierce resistance, including ambushes by the Lakurawa faction, a notorious terror group known for its brutal operations. Despite the challenges, the forces successfully cleared key locations such as Areo, Damoria, and Tumuna Village.
“These camps were used as logistical bases for launching attacks against civilians and security personnel,” a senior military official confirmed.
Six terrorists were reportedly neutralized during the operation, while several others fled with gunshot wounds. One soldier sustained injuries and has been evacuated to the 8 Division Military Hospital in Sokoto. A local vigilante assisting the troops was also killed in action.
Recovered from the sites were assorted weapons, ammunition, two handheld radios, and several motorcycles used by the insurgents for mobility and coordination.
The operation marks a significant push by the Nigerian military to reclaim ungoverned spaces and disrupt the operational capacity of terror groups in the region.
