The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Oguejiofo T. Ujam, has acknowledged that the institution has lost its leading status as Nigeria’s premier university, citing frequent leadership changes as a major setback.
Addressing the university’s Senate on Wednesday, Ujam emphasized that the appointment of three consecutive acting Vice-Chancellors within three years is a clear indication of the university’s declining position. He called for a renewed commitment to ethical reorientation, innovation, and academic excellence.
“The fact that this university has witnessed three acting Vice-Chancellors within a year does not require rocket science to understand that it has retreated significantly from its prestigious position,” he stated.
Ujam noted that UNN is not alone in facing declining moral and academic standards, as similar issues plague other institutions. However, he urged the Senate to take collective responsibility in restoring the university’s legacy.
“This charge is a collective demand on our individual contributions to reposition the institution on a steady course toward ethical and innovative learning,” he added.
The acting VC, who will serve for six months until a substantive Vice-Chancellor is appointed, expressed optimism that the Senate would support his vision to implement meaningful reforms.
He urged members to move beyond personal interests and divisive politics, stressing that unity and collective action are crucial for progress.
“As part of the grand vision to position UNN as a global player in modern tertiary education, I plan to establish a University of Nigeria Scholarship Office. UNN must not lag in the technological contest shaped by the rivalry between OpenAI and DeepSeek,” Ujam said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to restoring UNN to its legendary status as a hub for human inquiry and innovation.
