Political economist Pat Utomi has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former lawmaker Dino Melaye, accusing them of engaging in worse conduct than Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Utomi condemned the Senate’s decision to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan following her sexual harassment allegations, describing it as an act of impunity that undermines democracy.
In a post on X, he argued that the suspension was a political witch-hunt rather than a legitimate disciplinary action. He questioned why Akpabio and Melaye, who have been involved in various controversies, were never subjected to similar punitive measures.
“Akpabio himself and Dino Melaye have engaged in worse conduct than what they accused her of, yet they did not face similar sanctions,” Utomi wrote.
“Kangaroo Court That Ignores Fair Hearing”
He further criticized the Senate for what he called a “Kangaroo court” process, stating that its failure to ensure fair hearing made a mockery of democracy.
Utomi also pointed out that the Senate’s decision violated court rulings that prohibit the suspension of National Assembly members.
“The Senate assumes it has the authority to act as her employer, disregarding court rulings that protect lawmakers from arbitrary suspension. This raises serious concerns about the weight of the rule of law in Nigeria,” he added.
