South Africa’s Consul-General in Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, has revealed that visa applications from Nigerians have almost doubled in recent months, even amid ongoing reports of xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants.
Speaking in an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Sunday, Moroe insisted that South Africa remains safe and open for tourism, business and other travel. He rejected online claims that South African missions in Nigeria had stopped issuing visas to Nigerians, describing the reports as false.
“I just want to give reassurance that South Africa is open for business, South Africa is open for tourism, and South Africa is open for any other form of visit,” Moroe said. “And it is also untrue to suggest that South African missions in Nigeria do not offer visas to Nigerians anymore… the number of visa applications have almost doubled.”
The comments come against a backdrop of renewed xenophobic violence in parts of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The attacks, often linked to tensions over jobs and crime, have involved looting of foreign-owned shops, assaults and forced displacements. In response, the Nigerian government facilitated the repatriation of more than 1,400 citizens who were stranded or feared for their safety.
Moroe urged prospective travellers to secure the required visas before departure, comply with South African immigration laws and familiarise themselves with local regulations and their rights. He also advised knowing the locations of law enforcement agencies in case of emergencies.
The Consul-General expressed optimism that bilateral visits between the two countries would continue to grow, stressing that South Africa values its relationship with Nigeria.
