Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has accused the governors of Kwara and Imo states of working against him as political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday, Wike reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid while criticising what he described as performative loyalty from some politicians.
“You see, the problem with people, they want them to be seen, that they are the people working for the President. I don’t do that,” Wike said.
He confirmed that Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was among those he had in mind. According to Wike, AbdulRazaq has led a sustained campaign against him and previously accused the minister of sponsoring political candidates in Kwara—a claim Wike rejected.
“Take for example, Kwara, he has been the one championing this campaign against me everywhere. Yes, I have confronted him too. I don’t talk about what I cannot defend,” he stated.
Wike also questioned the political fallout from the removal of three senators and one member of the House of Representatives from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He argued that leaving the affected lawmakers without a political base risked pushing them toward opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Now, these senators you removed, you have no place for them. Therefore, do you prefer them to go to ADC or to go to NDC?” he asked. He added that politicians who aligned with him would support Tinubu: “Now, if they come to me, obviously, they will vote for Mr President.”
The minister denied deliberately installing candidates in various states. He said some governors had raised concerns with him about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fielding candidates, prompting him to respond that no agreement existed to keep the PDP off the ballot simply because of his support for the president.
Addressing reported tensions with Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma, Wike said the governor was well aware of the support he had previously received from him. “The governor of Imo State knows the support I gave to him very well,” he remarked.
Despite the frictions, Wike stressed that his overriding priority remains Tinubu’s victory in 2027. He insisted his backing for the president does not depend on personal relations with individual APC governors.
Wike remains a member of the PDP while openly supporting the APC presidential candidate, a stance that has drawn criticism from several opposition figures as the next election cycle approaches.
