The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he has no regrets over not being chosen as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election and vowed to ensure Atiku’s continued failure in future elections.
Wike, speaking through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, was responding to Atiku’s recent remarks in an interview with Adesina Giwa-Osagie. Atiku had stated that he had “no regrets” about overlooking Wike in favor of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
The rivalry between the two politicians dates back to the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries. After losing the presidential ticket to Atiku, Wike had anticipated being selected as his running mate. However, Atiku opted for Okowa, citing recommendations from a PDP committee that ranked Okowa first, Wike second, and former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel third.
In response, Olayinka took to X (formerly Twitter) to assert that Wike also had no regrets, adding that he played a role in Atiku’s defeat and would ensure he loses again.
“Two years after making the @OfficialPDPNig lose a presidential election it could have won, @atiku is giving reasons he did not pick @GovWike as his running mate and that he has no regrets,” Olayinka posted.
“Someone should tell our serial presidential election contester that Wike also has no regret for ensuring that he failed in the election and will make sure that he fails again and again.”
