The Imo State Police Command has responded to a violent crisis in the Umusi/Olokwa Community, Owerri West LGA, where the Youth Leader-elect, Stanley Nwoke, was killed two months after winning the community’s general youth election.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, revealed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, strongly condemned the killing and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The attack, which occurred on March 15, 2025, also left four of Nwoke’s siblings injured and resulted in the destruction of nine houses.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the violence stemmed from the youth election held on January 3, 2025. A faction allegedly led by Chinaza Nwachukwu and others—who remain at large—rejected Nwoke’s victory and are suspected to be behind the attack.
Following the incident, CP Danjuma and his management team visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment, offering condolences to the bereaved family and affected residents. The commissioner reassured the community of the police force’s commitment to ensuring justice and preventing further violence.
So far, four suspects have been arrested and are under investigation, while efforts continue to apprehend other fleeing suspects. Okoye confirmed that Nwoke’s body has been deposited in the morgue, and the injured victims are receiving medical treatment.
The police commissioner also assured residents that normalcy has been restored in the community, with enhanced security measures in place. He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing the importance of peaceful conflict resolution.
