Yoweri Museveni has officially begun a seventh term as Uganda’s president, extending his rule to nearly four decades after winning January’s disputed presidential election.
The swearing-in ceremony was held on Tuesday at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, drawing thousands of supporters who gathered to witness the veteran leader take the oath of office.
According to Uganda’s Electoral Commission, Museveni secured 71.65 percent of the vote in the January polls. His main challenger, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, received 24.72 percent but rejected the outcome, claiming the election was marred by fraud, ballot manipulation, and other irregularities.
The election period attracted widespread criticism from observers and human rights groups, with allegations of voter intimidation, enforced disappearances of opposition supporters, and a nationwide internet shutdown that sparked concerns over the credibility of the process.
Museveni first came to power in 1986 after leading a successful rebel movement. Over the years, his administration has amended Uganda’s constitution to remove both presidential term and age limits, enabling him to remain eligible for office indefinitely.
His continued stay in power stands in contrast to earlier statements in which he criticised African leaders who cling to office for too long.
While critics accuse his government of suppressing dissent and weakening democratic institutions, supporters argue that Museveni has helped maintain stability and boost economic development in Uganda following years of instability after independence from Britain in 1962.
