A 19-year-old Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate, identified as Opesusi Faith Timilehin, has died by suicide in Lagos State after reportedly being disappointed with her examination score.
According to reports, Timilehin consumed a substance known as ‘Push Out’ rat poison on Monday at her residence in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, following the release of her Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) result, in which she scored 190.
Sources revealed that the teenager, who lived with her elder sister, had also taken the UTME in 2024 and performed better than she did this year. It was gathered that she later visited her sister’s workplace in distress and asked for palm oil, a common emergency antidote, to ease the discomfort caused by the poison.
An eyewitness said the sister was unaware of what had happened and initially ignored the request. However, alarm was raised when Timilehin confessed to ingesting poison while en route to the hospital. She was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Kolak Hospital in the Odogunyan area.
In a tragic twist, it was discovered that she had received an admission offer via her email just moments after her passing.
The UTME is a computer-based test organized annually by JAMB for students seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
