Financial analyst Kalu Aja has raised concerns over Nigeria’s 2025 budget, questioning the staggering N393.29 billion allocated for streetlight projects. According to Aja, the country should be the “Light of the World” with such an amount set aside for lighting alone.
Aja made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, in reaction to a report by civic tech organization BudgIT. The group revealed that the National Assembly inserted thousands of projects into the 2025 budget.
He expressed disbelief at the cost breakdown, noting that the budget covers 1,477 streetlights—translating to about N266 million per light.
“With the amount of ‘streetlights’ in this 2025 budget, Nigeria is supposed to be the light of the world,” he wrote. “1,477 streetlights for N393.29 billion? That’s N266 million per light. Are we installing the sun?”
Last week, BudgIT disclosed that the National Assembly inserted 11,122 projects valued at N6.93 trillion into the N54.99 trillion 2025 budget.
