The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki to contest the 2027 presidential election if the party hopes to secure victory.
In a statement on Monday, Primate Ayodele warned that former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is not the right choice for the party. He asserted that if Atiku contests again, it will mark the “final burial” of the PDP.
“The best Atiku can do is support a credible candidate, and right now, the only viable option for PDP is Goodluck Jonathan if they want to stand a chance in 2027,” Ayodele stated.
He further advised that Jonathan should form an alliance with Bukola Saraki and other opposition parties to increase PDP’s chances.
“If PDP wants to come close to victory, they must convince Goodluck Jonathan to run under the party’s platform to revive them from their current state.
“Atiku is not the answer for PDP. If he contests again, it will be the end of the party. He does not have what it takes to remove Tinubu from office.
“If Jonathan can team up with Saraki and secure the backing of a coalition of opposition parties, PDP will stand a better chance,” Ayodele added.
The cleric revealed that Jonathan is hesitant about returning to the presidential race due to fear of uncertainty. He urged PDP to provide him with the necessary support and encouragement to change his stance.
“If Jonathan is willing, he must be ready to take the necessary steps, but right now, he is scared. The fear of the unknown troubles him.
“If PDP can persuade him and offer the full backing he needs, he may help the party survive,” Ayodele stated.
Primate Ayodele further emphasized that without Jonathan in the race and without a strong opposition alliance, President Bola Tinubu will retain power in 2027.
He described the kind of candidate who could potentially defeat Tinubu as someone who is financially stable, desperate, fearless, and politically ruthless.
“The 2027 election will not be for the weak or undecided. The person who wants to win must be determined, financially strong, and ready to take risks.
“The next election is not for ‘righteous’ people but for those who understand the game of politics. Tinubu is too strong to be easily pushed aside,” he warned.
